It was a battle between a pair of winless clubs, desperately searching for that first victory. It's only four games into the St. Thomas Men's Basketball League season but no one wants to be winless. Next Door Neighbour Lawn Care and Millcreek Plumbing fought back and forth eventually needing overtime. In the end NDN (1-3) pulled out a 65-57 win, outscoring the Plumbers (0-4) 11-3 in the extra five minute session. Casey Herbert and Rich Corriveau led the way for the winners scoring 20 and 18 respectively. Jesse Foster had 19 and Andrew Gray added 11 in a losing cause.
As expected it was a run and gun affair between Canadian Tire and Mackie's. While neither team shot particularly well, the fast pace yeilded a number of attempts. Tied at 31 at the half no one wanted to give as the lead never stretched beyond six. Tied at 61 Brent Lale scored six straight points to put the game out of reach as Mackie's (3-1) ended on a 7-0 run to win it 68-61. Lale had a team high 22 while his brother David Lale added 20. Jordan Jacobs was one of four players in double figures with a team high 26 in the loss for Canadian Tire (2-2).
There was no stopping Brian Apfelbeck in the all-Elgin matchup. The Elgin Realty guard put up the seasons best performance coming out of the gate on fire. He made four three-pointers in the first five minutes of the game and had seven in total by halftime. His 27 point performance in the opening 20 minutes gave the Realtors a ten point advantage. In the second half Elgin Chrysler was able to contain him a little but he still finished with a career high 37 points in s 78-70 win. Nevada Cooke also added 15 and Darby Parsons 12 for the Realtors (3-1) who move into a first place tie with the win. Andrew Lynch (23 points) and Nathan Bokma (21) were the top scorers for Elgin Chrysler (3-1) who suffer its loss of the season.
The Braxtons Tap and Grill combo of the night was Casey Herbert and Rich Corriveau of NDN Lawn Care. They worked the pick and roll to perfection combining for 38 points in their team's first victory of the season.
A quick look at the scoring leaders through four games: Andrew Lynch (89 points), Brian Apfelbeck (78), Brent Lale (71), Rich Corriveau (68) and Jordan Jacobs (68).
