SHORT HANDED ROSTERS AS JAYS WIN GAME 5

As Trey Yesavage was turning in a performance for the ages, the St. Thomas Men's Basketball League struggled to field some rosters Wednesday.

Two of the three games were played, with the other postponed.

In the opener, Mackie's got back in the win column after a three-game losing streak, beating Home Hardware 72-60.

With both teams missing top players, the OrangeAde's outlasted a five-man Home Owners squad for the win.

Tai Montfort had 22 points, while Brent Lale added 15, and Nic Roberts-Neef and Ian Thomson a dozen each for the winners (2-4).  Juan Carranza lead four players in double figures for the Home Owners (4-3).

The game was tight for most of the contest, with Mackie's jumping out to a double-digit lead, but Home Hardware answering with a run of their own to tie the game at 44.  A 6-0 run at the end of the third, and a six-point fourth quarter advantage stretched the game out of reach.  Mark Cummings had 16 points, with Alex Roberts-Neef scoring 12 and Ben Girden 10 in a losing cause.

In the second of two, Cole-Munro Foods held off an undermanned Talbot Trail Physiotherapy squad for a 75-68 victory.

The game featured the league's top two scorers going head to head and it didn't disappoint.  Jack Girden scored 31 points for the Trout (4-3) while Ryan Pflanzer had 30 for the Physiotherapists (4-3).

The game was tight most of the way with the scorers exchanging blows. Girden made 14 field goals, while Pflanzer was bottled up from deep, but fought his way to the rim and the foul line going 15-18 from the charity stripe.

Oliver Taylor had 14 points and Andrew Cole 13 for the winners, while Aaron Baker had 16 points and call-up Merrick Mount had 14 for Talbot Trail.

Injury puts damper on Monday Action

A triple header of basketball Monday night took a back burner for concern over an injured player.

We'll get to the details and an update in a minute, but first Ryan Pflanzer scored 41 points to lead Talbot Trail Physiotherapy to a 79-72 win over Ambrose Plumbing.

Pflanzer scored 13 points in the opening quarter, as TTP jumped out to a 22-14 lead.  That mark was extended to a dozen at the half as reigning Elgin Chrysler Player of the Week Isaiah Kelch scored 11 in the second frame.

In the 3rd, Pflanzer scored another 16 as they maintained their advantage and won by seven.

Kelch finished with 17, with Aaron Baker adding 12 for the winners (4-2).  Jimmy Hendricksen had 28 points for the Plumbers (1-4).

Midway through the fourth quarter, the game tok a turn when Matt Agbetiafa went down with injury and needed a trip to STEGH.

He sent a note which said he suffered a deep hip sublaxation. His hip popped out and back in. He's on crutches for now and may have some damage. He'll be out indefinitely and will have more information in coming days.

In the middle contest, Home Hardware used 19-12 third quarter to pull away from Elite Stars to win 77-56.

Leading by two at the break, the Home Owners (4-2) won the second half 39-22 with four players scoring double figures. Juan Carranza had 21 points with Connor Hodgins Depont adding 19 as HH pulled into a tie for first overall.

Rob Wakfield had 16 in a losing cause for the Stars (4-2) who now share a 3-way tie for first.

In the finale, Cole-Munro Foods took advantage of a short-handed Mackie's team to blow them out 101-77.

The Trout jumped out to an early 16-point lead but a hard fight by the OrangeAde's erased the defecit to lead 31-30. From that point it was one-sided as the Trout blew it out by early in the third quarter.

Jack Girden had 36 points with Andrew Cole adding 20 and Owen Samms 15 for the winners who now are back to .500 at 3-3.

Taran Beekhuis had 25 points and Tai Montfort 24 for Mackie's (1-4) who have dropped three in a row with an undermanned team as they await the arrival of their first round pick.

STARS SHINE IN A PAIR OF WINS TO END WEEK IN TOP SPOT

The opener Wednesday at Parkside Collegiate turned in one of the most entertaining games of the year. Cole Munro Foods (CMF) and Ambrose Plumbing exchanging blows back and forth to the finish.

In the end, the Trout (2-3) held off a last second shot to win 64-63 over the Plumbers (1-3).

With the scored tied at 59 with two minutes to go, Oliver Taylor knocked down a three to give CMF a 62-59 lead. However Merrick Mount answered back with a three of his own just seconds later to tie it.

Jack Girden would score a layup to put the Trout up by 2, and with a one-point lead and time winding down, the Plumbers last second winning attempt bounced off the rim.

Girden had 23 points and Taylor 18 for the winners. Jimmy Hendricksen led three players in double digits for the Plumbers with 19.

There was another thriller between Talbot Trail Physiotherapy (TTP) and Home Hardware.

The game of runs took place all night long as the teams exchanged leads multiple times through the first three quarters.  TTP lead by six after one, but a 27-point second quarter had the Home Owners up 40-33 at the break.

In the third, rookie Isaiah Kelch got on fire, scoring 14 points in the third quarter alone, including a buzzer beater to give the Physiotherapists a 52-51 lead entering the final frame.

Ryan Pflanzer struggled from the field most of the night, but turned it on in the fourth, scoring 13 of his 24, with Kelch adding another seven of his career high 29 as TTP (3-2) held on for a 79-73 win.

The comeback spoiled a great game by Juan Carranza for the Home Owners (3-2) who had 26 points.

The other contest was a mismatch from the tip with Elite Stars Elgin (4-1) blowing out Mackie's (1-3) 80-73.

With the OrangeAde's missing two starters, the Stars took advantage jumping out to a 40-24 lead at the half. That 18-point lead was stretched to 24 after three quarters as the Stars made shots from inside and out.  Brian Apfelbeck had 24 points, and Rob Wakefield 20 for the winners.  Taran Beekhuis and Tai Montford had 18 each and Brent Lale 17 in a losing cause for Mackie's.

STARS, HOME OWNERS AND BLUE JAYS WIN

On a night when the Blue Jays advance to the World Series for the first time in 32 years, Elite Stars and Home Hardware picked up victories at PCI.

The opener of the evening saw Elite Stars Elgin do something the Jays have done all year, comeback to win.

Talbot Trail Physiotherapy jumped out to a 24-17 first quarter lead wtih Ryan Pflanzer scroing 13 of his 25 first half points.  In the second quarter the Stars Rob Wakefield got his team back within striking distance by scoring a dozen of his own in the frame, to bring the defecit to just four at the half.

The Stars chipped away over the next ten minutes and going into the fourth they trailed just 53-52.

With the score tied at 59 Brian Apfelbeck nailed a go-ahead three pointer with just under four minutes to go. Two minutes later, he made another huge shot to extend a one-point game to a 65-61 lead.

The Stars (3-1) stayed in top spot in the league with a 71-63 victory. Apfelbeck scored 17 of his team high 24 in the second half, while Wakefield chipped in 22.

Pflanzer had 29 points in a losing cause for TT (2-2) as he was held to just four points in the final 20 minutes, while his team scored just 21.

In the other contest Home Hardware kept pace with the league leaders with an 85-60 blowout win over Cole-Munro Foods.

This one was one-sided from the jump as it felt like the Trout were playing uphill all night long.

The Home Owners got 14 first half points from Kamal Aizimi and 10 more from Ben Girden as they cruised to a 45-23 lead at the half.

That 22 point lead never really got closer as the Home Owners (3-1) dominated throughout. Juan Carranza had 25 points including 13 in the third quarter, while Aizimi had 20 and Connor Hodgins Depont scoring 16 for the winners.

Jack Girden had 22 points and Oliver Taylor a 13 for the Trout (1-3) who have dropped three straight.

The Ambrose Plumbing and Mackie's game has been moved to Dec. 17 after most players preferred to watch the Jays play game 7 of the ALCS.  That decision was a good one, as it was a heck of a finish.
